Introduction to UN-CSD

For the next two weeks, Grow will be blogging from the Commission on Sustainable Development (19th year of meetings, thus CSD-19) at United Nations Headquarters in New York. CSD operates in two-year cycles: the first focusing on developing the Secretary General’s report while emphasizing cluster issues of the particular cycle; the second focusing on editing the Secretary General’s document based on the outcome of the previous year, ending with the publication of the document (CSD-19 is the latter). It must be noted that these working texts and outcomes are not legally binding for member states.

The five themes of this year’s CSD are sustainable consumption and production (SCP), waste management, mining, chemicals and transportation. Our blog posts from CSD will cover both the policy proceedings (focusing on SCP) as well as relevant side events (lectures and panels) hosted by groups such as FAO (http://www.fao.org/).

While at CSD, we will be representing the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS) as part of the Youth Caucus, a civil society group working to advocate the interests of youth and children in the CSD policy process. We would like to thank Iowa State University for supporting our participation at CSD. Please visit the websites below for additional information about these groups.
